ROOF PROBLEMS CAN CAUSE SHINGLE CUPPING OR CURLING

You can see a problem if your roof’s edges curl up or under you. You may need to replace or repair your roof. To diagnose the root cause of the problem, you will need to have a professional inspect your roof.

It is best to have an expert diagnose and treat the problem. This is especially important if your roof has a twenty-year warranty, but the roof has only been ten. These are four common roof issues that can lead to curling and cupping in your asphalt shingles.

1. UV DAMAGE

The asphalt can be damaged by the sun’s ultraviolet rays and eventually become brittle. Because UV rays can cause severe damage to asphalt shingles, they also break down the protective, tarry material that protects them and prevents them from drying out, shrinking, and cracking.

Shingle granules are coated to protect against damage. If you notice shingle granules in your gutter, you should consider replacing them. Your roof is more susceptible to damage if this protective coating is lost. Granule loss can occur after hail storms, when people walk on the roof or when leaves and other debris accumulate on the roof.

2. THERMAL SHOCK

Although UV damage causes shingles to become less flexible, so they don’t compress or stretch as much in response to temperature changes. Thermal shock, however, is caused by extreme temperature changes that can make even the most flexible shingles more difficult. Thermal shock can also cause severe damage to roofs that have suffered UV damage.

Particularly in hot summer months, where there are cool nights and hot days, thermal shock can be a problem. Extreme temperature fluctuations between hot summer days and cool nights can over time cause asphalt to lose its ability to contract and stretch as it heats up and cools.

3. DEFECTIVE SHINGLES

You can point to the manufacturer if your shingles begin to curl up at the edges. This is often the case especially if your roof is new.

A manufacturing defect could be when one batch of shingles contains too much sticky tar, which is supposed to only be one ingredient of a balanced product. This can cause roofs to age faster than they should, even though they looked great at the time of installation.

4. POOR ROOF VENTILATION

There are many reasons roof ventilation is important. It removes moisture from roof spaces that could otherwise become stagnant and lead to termites and rot. Ventilation is also important in preventing heat-related damage. Bad ventilation can make it difficult to remove the heat from the attic.

The roofing shingles can become hotter and more susceptible to heat damage from the heat coming from both directions. Poor ventilation can lead to roof damage or replacement. You will also need ventilation.

All four of these roof problems can cause roof damage, which results in curving or cupping your roofing shingles.
